Guide - Fresh Ginger EO
Originally from India, the term ginger comes from the Sanskrit word “shringavera”, which means “antler-shaped deer”, referring to its appearance. The stem has long dark green lanceolate leaves. Ginger flowers only exceptionally with a yellow and white cone-shaped flower, usually punctuated with red or more rarely purple. Its fruits contain black seeds.
It has been cultivated in China for 5000 years and its fragrance was reputed to protect against tiger attack. Malaysians have always boiled the halia rhizome as they call it, and drank water to treat their stomach aches. Used by the Greeks and Romans as a spice, its rhizome was highly recommended for digestion by the famous Greek doctor, pharmacologist and botanist Dioscorides.
Today, ginger is known worldwide for its aphrodisiac properties and anti-nausea properties. It is also traditionally used as a spice in cooking.
