Guide - Clove Bud EO

The Story:

The clove has a conical shape, and has persistent oval and tough leaves. The parts used for the essential oil are the closed buds of the clove flowers, which look like small nails with heads and are also used as a spice.

200 years before Christ, the Ramayana, a major Indian work, already mentions its trade. A clove has even been found among the charred remains of a kitchen at a site in present-day Syria, dated 1700 BC.

In the Moluccas, a clove tree is planted on the day a child is born. In the Middle Ages, it was in fashion and was found in pharmaceutical compositions to relieve pain or facilitate digestion.

It is also used in the composition of kohl and tradition attributes it the power to protect against bad luck or disease. In a completely different vein, the “amber apple” is an air freshener made at Christmas time with an orange covered with cloves.

In cooking, it is found in the pot au feu, with the famous onion pricked with a few nails, in sauerkraut or gingerbread.
